Roaming a little farther afield...

As I continue to forge ahead with the examining habits of local governance, specifically how to increase the 'relationship of engagement' between residents and their Councillors (all posts have the label/tag 'Civic Engagement' should you wish to peruse), I'm chuffed when an article appears, or a link passes my desk that might add even a little to the process.

In today's Toronto Star, we have Susan Delacourt's piece 'How voters became political consumers'.

Granted, the story focuses on federal politics and the strange animal it has become, but there are enough points raised to feed into the discussion.

As always, the Comments section proves to be as intriguing a read as the article itself; I invite you to take a look.

(I especially love the article's tease: 'In tomorrow’s paper, a conclusion and a question: Is democracy too old-fashioned for the modern political marketplace?')

Additionally, Ms. Delacourt references Lizabeth Cohen's 'sweeping saga of post-World War II America, A Consumers’ Republic.' No, it's not about Canada, and it's not about Hamilton. But I'm willing to bet that it'll shine some additional light on how we got to where we are right now...and after all; isn't additional illumination what we're all craving these days, when there's so much darkness...? (To this end, I've ordered it from the Hamilton Public Library.)

I'm always interested in feedback, differing opinions, even contrarian blasts...as long as they're delivered with decorum...with panache and flair always helping.
